Baptism is a special event, not only in the life of a child and family, but also for the life of the Church. Parents should
call the rectory office to begin the process, which includes meeting with a priest or deacon at a mutually convenient time to discuss Baptism arrangements. In addition, to assist parents in preparing
for the Sacrament, Holy Name Parish offers a one-morning Baptism Preparation Program. The preparation program, which takes place in the Rectory, is held the second Saturday of the month from
9:30-11:00am. This is a requirement for all first time parents. Godparents are invited but not required to attend. Parents/Godparents may participate in any preparation session prior to the
Baptism–not necessarily the one immediately preceding the Sunday of Baptism. To plan accordingly, let us know the day you will attend. |

Baptism is usually the 3rd Sunday of the month at 2:00pm in the upper church.
Who Can Become A Godparent? A godparent is a trusted adult who will ensure that a child is raised in the faith. According to Canon 873, only
one male or one female sponsor or one of each sex is to be employed. To be
admitted to the role of godparent a person is required to: |
 |
|
|
1. |
Be over the age of 16. |
2. |
Be a Catholic who has been confirmed and has already received the Sacrament of Most Holy Communion and leads a life in
harmony with the faith and the role to be undertaken. |
3. |
The godparent must not be the father or mother of the one to be baptized. |
4. |
A baptized person who belongs to a non-Catholic Christian community cannot be a godparent but may be a "Christian
Witness" as long as the other godparent is a Catholic who fulfills the above requirements. |

During infant Baptism, godparents are asked if they will help the parents in their duty as Christian parents. They are invited to renew their baptismal
vows and assist in lighting the child's candle. However, parents hold the child for the baptism. There are many wonderful people with great character who would make wonderful
godparents but do not fulfill the Church's requirements. All Catholic parents should know the requirements before asking someone to be a godparent.
